The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Tasmania’s 40th Anniversary

The Pirates of Penzance

20 – 28 September 2013
The Playhouse Theatre

Tuesday to Saturday 8pm, Matinee Sunday 22 September 2pm

A sensational Steampunk take on the classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta is coming to town!

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Tasmania bring you the long running Broadway smash, and arguably the duo’s most popular musical comedy, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ in a dashing and daring new interpretation by Director Chris Hamley. Celebrate the Society’s 40th Anniversary by throwing your up your petticoats and toasting a flagon of wine to yet another pair of star-crossed lovers and their entourage.

Young and spunky Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He then meets Mabel, the sweeter-than-sweet daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two fall instantly in love. But it comes to pass that Frederic was born on 29 February, so technically only has a birthday each leap year. As his apprenticeship indentures state that he remains in servitude to the pirates until his 21st birthday, must he really serve for another 63 years? What will this mean for his love for Mabel and their plans to marry? Where will Frederic find his solace, in his duty - or in his love?

With more edge, humour and ham than even musical theatre knows, this fine cast will entertain you with an affecting tale of what ensues when love and honour are pitted against each other upon the seas of the mercantile navy.
